Entrevista exclusiva con Evan Glodell, director de Bellflower. (Exclusive Interview with Evan Glodell, director of Bellflower)
Evan Glodell, director, escritor y actor principal de su opera prima Bellflower ha concedido una entrevista exclusiva a ''Snootchie Bootchies", posiblemente la primera entrevista concedida a un sitio de habla castellana.
1. ¿Quién es Evan Glodell?
Yo soy un cineasta de Baraboo, WI. Me mudé a Los Ángeles en 2001 para seguir haciendo cine y después de diez años haciendo cortos sin presupuesto con los amigos he decidido hacer mi primer largometraje, Bellflower.
2. ¿Cuál es tu director favorito? ¿Y tu película?
Lo siento, he evitado esta pregunta totalmente hasta el momento. Es muy difícil de contestar porque hay muchos grandes directores y películas. Últimamente creo que disfruto viendo películas que están dirigidas firmemente por el escritor/director porque normalmente presentan una clara visión personal.
3. ¿Has hecho algo más relacionado con el cine antes de Bellflower?
He hecho decenas de cortometrajes, algunos videos musicales y de vez en cuando trabajo por contrato en proyectos pequeños como director de fotografía.
4. ¿Cuándo y como nació la idea de Bellflower?
Se me ocurrió después de una muy intensa relación y ruptura que pasó hace casi diez años.
5. ¿La película tiene algo de autobiográfico?
La película es ficción, pero muchas de las ideas y temas están basados en mi vida y relaciones que he tenido
6. De tu película se han dicho muchas cosas: Que es una historia de autodestrucción, que trata sobre la estupidez del hombre ante una ruptura, que es una historia de redención o incluso que es una crítica a una parte de la sociedad americana. ¿Hiciste la película con la intención de que se entendiera de una única manera o querías que cada uno sacara su propia conclusión al final del film?
Sobretodo quiero que la gente entienda la película a su manera. He estado mucho tiempo trabajando en ella y aún ahora a veces encuentro cosas que no sabía que estaban ahí.
7. ¿Qué te parece que comparen Bellflower con "El Club de la Lucha" y a ti con el nuevo Tarantino?
Es muy halagador ser comparado con tales películas y cineastas con talento. Solo soy otro cineasta, pero me hace sentir esperanzado el que algunas personas les guste Bellflower lo suficiente como para decir estas cosas.
8. La película es estéticamente muy fuerte y rompedora, en gran medida gracias a la cámara ¿Cómo se os ocurrió construir una cámara especial para el film? ¿Tuvisteis dificultades?
Es un hobby que he tenido durante muchos años, customizar cámaras. Así que solamente trabajo de esa forma. Ya tengo dos cámaras nuevas preparadas para el siguiente proyecto. Al principio, cuando empezamos a grabar Bellflower, se rompían casi diariamente y eso hizo que las cosas fueran más lentas teniendo que repararlas constantemente. Por suerte estoy mejorando y las nuevas son más fiables.
9. Háblanos un poco sobre el discurso de Lord Humungus.
Esta es una complicada. Hay muchas cosas distintas que podría decir sobre el discurso de Aiden al final de la película. Lo más general que puedo decir es que él ve la razón por la que su amigo está confuso y pretende gastarle una broma para hacérselo ver. Por el tipo de tíos que son, él no puede solamente decirle "Hey tio, has cometido algunos errores en tu relación y no puedes solamente culpar a Milly, también es tu culpa. Debes hacer algo." En vez de eso, él le hace fumar hierba para ponerlo en un estado susceptible y ponerse a despotricar como un loco llamándole Lord Humungus y especulando como podría haber hecho las cosas de un modo diferente.
10. El público español pudo ver la película en el festival de Sitges, donde ganó el premio a mejor película por el jurado "Carnet Joven". ¿Hay planes para la distribución en España o al menos de incluir subtítulos en español en alguna edición del DVD?
Sé que hay un plan para la distribución, no he escuchado la última palabra, pero imagino que habrá subtítulos.
11. ¿Tienes un próximo film en mente?
Sí, estoy terminando mi próximo guión ahora mismo. He estado trabajando en ello a tiempo parcial durante casi dos años y espero que esté en producción el primer semestre del año que viene.
12. ¿Alguna anécdota sobre el rodaje?
Sí, el discurso de Tyler (discurso de Lord Humungus) al final de la película fue grabado dentro de "El coche Medusa" conmigo, Tyler y un micrófono solos a las 3 de la madrugada aparcados en una calle cualquiera sin salida en Ventura. Siempre pienso en ello cuando veo el final de la película y nunca le he dicho nada a nadie.
13. ¿Unas palabras para el público español?
No estuve en Sitges cuando ganamos el premio, nunca he estado en España, y realmente me gustaría ir. He escuchado que el recibimiento que tuvo la peli fue muy bueno, y solo quiero decir que gracias a todos los que vieron la peli y nos apoyaron.

1. Who is Evan Glodell?
I am a filmmaker from Baraboo, WI. I moved to Los Angeles in 2001 to pursue filmmaking and after ten years of making no-budget short films with friends i decided to make my first feature film Bellflower.
2. What is your favorite director? And movie?
I apologize, i have avoided this question completely so far. It's too hard to answer because there are so many great directors and films. Lately i seem to enjoy seeing films that are heavily writer/director driven because they often present a very clear personal vision.
3. Do you do something more about the cinema before Bellflower?
I made dozens of short films, a few music videos and occasionally work for hire on smaller projects as a cinematographer.
4. When and how born then idea of Bellflower?
It came to me after a very intense relationship and breakup i went through almost ten years ago.
5. The film have something autobiographical?
The film is fiction, but many of the ideas and themes are based on my life and relationships i have been in.
6. From your movie they have been said a lot of things: That is an history of self-destruction, that treat about the silly of man in view of a breaking-off, that is an history about redemption or even that is a review for the other hand to the American society. Did you do the film with the intention that we understand it in only one way or you want that we give our own conclusions about the final of the film?
I absolutely want people to take the film in their own way. I spent a lot of time working on it and even now i sometimes find things in it that i didn't realize were there.
7. What do you think about make a comparison with Bellflower and "Fight Club" and say that you are the new Tarantino?
It's very flattering to be compared to such talented filmmakers and films. I am just another filmmaker, but it makes me feel hopeful that some people like Bellflower enough to say things like that.
8. The film is aesthetic very strong and breaking, in a big measure thanks to the film camera? How did you think about to make a special camera for the film? Did you have some difficulties?
It is a hobby i have had for many years, customizing cameras. So it is just how i work. I already have two new cameras built for the next project. When we first started shooting Bellflower they would break almost daily and it slowed things down quite a bit having to constantly repair them. Hopefully i am getting better and the new ones are more reliable.
9. Tell us a little bit about Lord Humungus speech.
This is a complicated one. There are many different things you could say about Aiden's speech at the end of the film. The most broad thing i can say is that he sees what his friends is confused about and is pretending he's making a joke to help his friend see. The kind of guys they are, he can't just say to him "Hey man, you made some mistakes in your relationship and you can't just blame Milly, it's your fault as well. You need to move on." Instead he makes his friend smoke weed to put him in a susceptible state and goes on a crazy rant calling him Lord Humungus and speculating about how he could have done things differently.
10. The Spanish audience could have see the film in Sitge's Festival, where won the prize to the better film from the jury "Carnet Joven". There was some plan about the distribution in Spain or include subtitles in spanish in some edition of DVD?
I know there is a plan for distribution there, i haven't heard the final word, but i imagine there will be subtitles.
11. Do you have another film in your mind?
Yes, i am finishing my next script right now. I have been working on it part time for almost two years now and hopefully will be going into production in the first half of next year.
12. Do you have some anecdote about the filming?
Yes, Tylers speech(Lord Humungus speech) at the end of the movie was recorded inside the Medusa car with just me, tyler and a microphone alone at 3am parked on a dead end on some random street in Ventura. I always think about that when i see the end of the movie and i have never told anyone.
13. Can you tell us, some words to the spanish public
I wasn't at Sitges when we won the award, i have never been to Spain and i would really like to go. I heard the reception for the film was very good and i just want to say thank you to everyone who saw it and supported us.
